I was recommended SmartBuild (Ali Smart) by a trustworthy tradesman in Andover, and this led on to Ali carrying out two house renovations for me in recent years. He was a pleasure to deal with throughout – his word really was his bond, he was conscientious and communicative throughout and worked with pride and speed. He also interacted smoothly with other tradesman which was a good sign.

In the first house, he converted a garage to a living area (thoroughly insulating as appropriate), removed two chimneys, knocked through the kitchen/dining room including the installation of a ‘steel’, dealt with the electricians, glaziers, plumber and joiner, installed interior wall insulation and plastered throughout to a high standard, and always leaving the scene very tidy at the end of each day.

In the second house, he lowered the chimney so it was in the roofspace, removed fireplace, liaised with the roofer, knocked through the kitchen/diner, fixed internal insulation board, plastered where he had been making alterations.

Overall I found it a pleasure to be involved with Ali, I found him very trustworthy and straightforward in our dealings, and he involved me in the decision-making when required, he didn’t just make assumptions.

I have no hesitation in recommending him.

Ali has done a lot of work for me since the first job back in 2018.  He was originally recommended to me by a painter and decorator working in my house at the time, as I wanted my ceilings plastered.  Ali came to assess the work, sent me a quote by email and then arranged a date to do the work.  He turned up on time and carried out the work quickly and cleanly and it was obvious that he was somewhat of a perfectionist, professional, respected my home and I trusted him immediately.

I then asked him to quote to completely renovate my sloping garden so that it was on two flat levels with a large patio with steps going up to a large lawn.  Ali came up with ideas and designs with advice on materials.  There was skip loads of earth to get out and move and Ali did this almost single handily.  His brickwork on the retaining wall was immaculate and other builders (friends and family who have visited the house) have commented on the workmanship.  Once again Ali worked so hard every day, always respecting me and my home.

Recently Ali has carried out work in my lounge, taking out a fireplace and filling in and plastering and taking out a very unwanted archway.  Once again Ali has excelled, and the room looks amazing.  He worked, as always, quickly and respectfully and I’m sorry now that I’ve run out of work for him to do!

I can’t recommend Ali highly enough and I’m happy for anyone to visit my home to see the quality of his work.  I award Ali 11/10.  Well done Ali and thank you!

I purchased my large, ancient but run-down cottage fourteen years ago, and have been very hands-on in its gradual renovation ever since. I’m extremely fussy, strive for the best finish possible and demand that of any tradespeople that I use. The result is that nowadays, when people visit for the first time, the almost universal initial reaction is “Wow!” (which is nice).
Ali has been involved in making that happen for the last thirteen years, initially as an apprentice to another highly regarded and very well respected local tradesman. But for the last ten years he has worked as a stand-alone General Builder, and as such he only one whom I’ll employ.

In that time he has undertaken many projects for me. Some have been utterly mundane. Others have required him to research (and then work with) new materials or methods. Sometimes I’ve asked him to employ old techniques in new or unusual ways. And never has his work fallen short, often exceeding my (high) expectations.

On top of that, he is open, honest and trustworthy; in short a pleasure to employ and to have around.

If Ali can undertake your job, then I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending him to you.

We contacted Smartbuild from a recommendation for some internal alterations and some groundwork. From the first meeting with Ali to the completed project, we were impressed. Ali has completed several building projects for me and his professionalism is second to none. He’s clear on his pricing, delivers what he says he will & is open to the changes that invariably come. The last job was an extension & he completed all aspects of the build & worked with the specialist trades, where needed, to ensure everything was seamless. I’d thoroughly recommend.

Ali did a wonderful job of creating a kitchen/diner for me by knocking through from the dining room to kitchen. He removed the partition wall, blocked off the original kitchen door, and removed a pair of glass doors from the dining area then installed a splendid new entrance via a sliding door. His standard of work was first class, especially his plastering which was excellent and much appreciated by the painter when he came to do the decorating. After finishing that project Ali took on the task of project managing the fitting of my new  kitchen which ensured that the other trades were on site when needed and everything went according to plan. Ali himself laid the flooring throughout the kitchen/diner and utility room. Ali is a great all round builder and I would thoroughly recommend him to potential clients.
